Artist Statement
While in graduate school at Berkeley, I found myself feeling lost between contradictory cultures and aesthetics. I needed to re-evaluate and undo my early training and begin afresh like a child playing in the sand, making my own markings in the sand. It was the start of a serious soul searching. This taught me not to fear feeling lost or different. It has since become a point of reference and the inspiration for a feeling of freedom.
I most enjoy creating installations since I don’t know how it will actually work out until I complete the installation. It is a long and labor-intensive process to create the various parts. I am teeming with excitement when I begin an installation piece. The image in my head or the small sketches take on a life when the fragments piece together to become the whole. I relish the ability to use all the areas of three-dimensional spaces rather than just having a piece on a pedestal or hanging on a wall.
Throughout my career, my work has evolved into different phases of art making, but one constant is my thrill in taking on a new challenge or breaking boundaries set by others. I try to experiment from one piece to the next; I see my career as one continuous experiment.
