Christina Corbin
Artist Statement
British-born ceramic artist Christina Corbin came to San Diego in 2003 as an Artist in Residence at San Diego State University after completing her Masters of Arts Degree in Cardiff, Wales. She has been teaching ceramics at Point Loma Nazarene University and is motivated by the growth and enthusiasm of her students.
Color, pattern, texture and form are important factors in her work. Many of her pieces are thrown in multiple sections, then assembled. Christina uses the sgraffito method to create her patterned black and white forms. Incising deeply and precisely through the black substrate into the white clay body allows infinite variation in tactile qualities. She creates both functional and sculptural pieces.
Movement and optical effects are a common theme in Christina’s work. The importance of these rudiments has emerged from an investigation into the dynamics of visual perception. Her optical art work is visually stimulating and evokes curiosity, demanding space for the energy it generates.
